Ching Community Gardens Story

A diverse group of neighbors and organizations worked for three years to acquire a historically important property owned by the Ching family beginning in 1957, a time when much of the area was redlined, preventing Asian Americans and other people of color from living here. Joe Ching was the first executive chef at the renowned Canlis restaurant in Seattle; he and his family were supported in the purchase of their home by restaurant founder Peter Canlis. Warm and inclusive people, Joe and his wife Jennie and their children created showpiece gardens and shared the delicious food they grew and prepared. The Ching Community Gardens honors their legacy. Your donation will help build gardens for community members to cultivate, a food forest with the Ching’s fruit trees at its heart, and a beautiful, living memorial to history.
