Here is our "WHY?"

(1) to reduce the hours needed to hand water these beds during the dry season

  • Currently our Pollinator Beds Lead, must schedule ~24 gardeners to commit to watering these beds, weekly, throughout the summer months, season after season. Managing this effort is complex and time-consuming due to life’s unscheduled demands of our gardeners.

(2) to reduce the huge volume of water that UpGarden uses annually
  • Despite the recent rains, we are still 3.5" below normal for total rainfall this time of year, so water conservation should be our mandated responsibility moving forward.
  • The garden must maintain our pollinator beds to service our pollinator bees that keep our plants and flowers thriving.
  • Water is wasted when running down our aisles from over-saturated beds due to hand watering
We discovered several years ago that most of the pollinator beds had irrigation lines installed but not connected. The deep irrigation requirements for these beds are very different than for our shallower garden plots – new controllers listed in the proposal will allow us to water these beds more effectively and efficiently.
